I must be the luckiest (or most spoiled) person ever!


I have been in panic mode again about finishing "The Move" to the new building. Today, Bryan unloaded the scooter I had at the old building and reloaded the things thrown in on the last Thursday. (We thought we'd have Friday to finish packing and sending things over - Mother Nature took that day away.) Knowing that I'd have trouble unloading the car, I threw a quick note on Facebook and Myspace. In less than 17 minutes, Kriste, Meghan, Crissy, Cynthia, Rosanne, and Nathan answered that they'd be there for me. I don't know if I'm lucky or spoiled, but I DO know that I am SOOOOOOOOOOO relieved! My guardian angels are so working overtime!

Special Presents


The past month has been extremely hectic, but it is now time to take a moment and reflect.
The move to the new school seemed insurmountable, but with a HUGE amount of help, my things are there. Over the holidays, hope to finish settling in (Sharon is helping me!)
Both Sharon and I are feeling pretty good - have avoided the "yuks" pretty well.
Although TERRIFIED of the ice, Bryan's pictures highlighted the absolute beauty God painted for us.

Especially enjoyed the little bit of "shopping" we got to do. Jackie told us about a site that lets you supply a third-world village with animals to teach how to help the economy. If you donate, say a goat (Jackie's choice!), the family is taught how to milk the goat, use the product, sell things made, mate the goat, give the "goatling" (what do you call a baby goat?) to another family to continue the process. I gave bee hives (of course!) and Sharon gave ducks!
Megan's angels gave us another opportunity. Cyndi (our "personal shopper") had a field day finding things the kids needed and wanted.
We're very fortunate that our friends and family LOVE these kinds of experiences. Bryan, Amy, and the kids (and one of Bryan's co-workers) helped us with a student at school who desperately needed baby things. From, "Do you have any extra diapers?" came many special things - especially the blanket that Amy and the kids made. ("Every baby needs a hand-made blankie.")
Lin (who helps us keep things up at home) has been working double-time with the new school, but made a point of helping us get groceries in and things cleaned up before the dangerous cold hit.

STILL teaching

Thought I was all ready for the open house after dedication of the new Hobart High School building - boxes unpacked; few "toys" out; desks rearranged; posters set; power points hooked together and looped. Test run on Saturday - NO POWER POINT!!! Technology worked overtime and Sunday, I'm set - except it still won't open! A little more fussing, visting with former students, helping current students, and it finally runs. BUT, no one really cared! Almost everyone who came was a former student or parent of former student, and my name was one of the few they recognized! Most asked question, "How long HAVE you been teaching???" (37th year!)
It sure was nice seeing four decades of students and parents!

St. Nicholas Day Gift

St. Nicholas Day is a gift-giving day, and Abbey-Abigail gave me a wonderful one!
I usually have to wake Abbey up in the morning to take (send) her outside to do the doggie thing. She has had "issues" in the past - refusing to go out in the rain; not leaving the porch; whining and barking. TODAY, Abbey actually woke me up! She never licks me in the face, but went for my uncovered ear until I finally got up. She RAN for the door, pranced until I opened it, dashed out and down the steps, jumped in the snow, and did BOTH doggie duties. She must be learning! (Since she'll be 4 on the 13th, I'd hope she would be potty trained by now!)

Joy!



Joy is such an easy thing to keep. Children who live in joy teach it to those who may have forgotten. I'm so lucky to be able to share the joy of the children around me.
And even in the joy, there is thought and truth. We can rest knowing that all is right in this world.

THANKFULNESS

As Thanksgiving draws closer, I'm reminded of how much I have to thank God for bringing in my life. Of course, the usual:
family, friends, colleagues, pets, work....
Most importantly, the need to be needed. I have become so "needy" that I've lost the feeling of being "needed."
Today, I was "needed."
Two of my sharpest students were having trouble with application essays. One just couldn't get a transition. I had her try something, and she said, "That's amazing - how did you do that so quickly?" The other wanted me to proofread her essay (not my strongest skill!) Cleaned up some grammar errors and she was thrilled.
Neither task was difficult, but they were sooooo happy. Yes, I was "thankful."

Let go; let God!

I finally paid attention to everyone's advice. I have been completely consumed worrying about "THE MOVE" to the new building. Living with box after box; trying to keep classes going; figuring when I will have the chance/time to unpack before dedication ceremony; gathering rest of stuff; and on and on. PLUS the things Sharon and I are trying to get done at home has meant little sleep for the past few weeks.
Sharon, Amy, Bryan, Cyndi, Crissy, Kriste, kids at school -- all keep telling me, "It will get done."
And then a miracle happened.
My student assistant has packed up 50 or so boxes; Jennifer came in when she had a sub and cleared out the closet; when I had training, Jennifer cleared out summer school/freshmen English things; today, Kaylee and Kelly spent two hours after school and boxed up all my Challenge books.
I am soooooooooo blest in sooooooooo many ways.
IT WILL GET DONE!

Amazing Amy

Some years ago, I was blessed to meet an amazing woman.

The first time Bryan asked Amy to the annual Christmas party, Sharyl said, "That's the girl he'll marry." Little did I know then how lucky we all would be.

Amy is Mom to 4 beautiful children, 2 dogs, 1 cat; wife and best friend to Bryan; daughter; daughter-in-law; sister; granddaughter; niece; niece-in-law; pharmacist; head of Moms Group; coach; cub scout Mom; Daisy Mom; school helper; story hour Mom; Bible group member; and many more roles. The "amazing" thing is - she actually does all these things extremely well!

Please bless her today on her birthday.

Life Lessons

In April, Maya Angelou was interviewed by Oprah on her birthday. Oprah asked her what she thought of growing older.
She said it was 'exciting.'
Maya Angelou said this:
'I've learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow.’
'I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.'
'I've learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you'll miss them when they're gone from your life.
'I've learned that making a 'living' is not the same thing as making a life.

Child of God

WHO'S YOUR DADDY?
A seminary professor was vacationing with his wife in Gatlinburg, TN. One morning, they were eating breakfast at a little restaurant, hoping to enjoy a quiet, family meal. While they were waiting for their food, they noticed a distinguished looking, white-haired man moving from table to table, visiting with the guests. The professor leaned over and whispered to his wife, 'I hope he doesn't come over here.' But sure enough, the man did come over to their table.

'Where are you folks from?' he asked in a friendly voice.

'Oklahoma' they answered.

'Great to have you here in Tennessee,' the stranger said. 'What do you do for a living?'

'I teach at a seminary,' he replied.
'Oh, so you teach preachers how to preach, do you? Well, I've got a really great story for you.' And with that, the gentleman pulled up a chair and sat down at the table with the couple.
The professor groaned and thought to himself, 'Great .. Just what I need ...another preacher story!'
The man started, 'See that mountain over there? (pointing out the restaurant window). Not far from the base of that mountain, there was a boy born to an unwed mother. He had a hard time growing up, because every place he went, he was always asked the same question, 'Hey boy, Who's your daddy?'
Whether he was at school, in the grocery store or drug store, people would ask the same question,
'Who's your daddy?'
He would hide at recess and lunchtime from other students. He would avoid going into stores because that question hurt him so bad.
When he was about 12 years old, a new preacher came to his church. He would always go in late and slip out early to avoid hearing the question,
'Who's your daddy?'
But one day, the new preacher said the benediction so fast that he got caught and had to walk out with the crowd. Just about the time he got to the back door, the new preacher, not knowing anything about him, put his hand on his shoulder and asked him,
'Son, who's your daddy?'
The whole church got deathly quiet. He could feel every eye in the church looking at him. Now everyone would finally know the answer to the question,
'Who's your daddy?'
This new preacher, though, sensed the situation around him and using discernment that only the Holy Spirit could give, said the following to that scared little boy.
'Wait a minute! I know who you are! I see the family resemblance now.
You are a child of God.
With that he patted the boy on his shoulder and said,
'Boy, you've got a great inheritance. Go and claim it.'
With that, the boy smiled for the first time in a long time and walked out the door a changed person. He was never the same again. Whenever anybody asked him,
'Who's your Daddy?'
he'd just tell them,
'I'm a Child of God.'
The distinguished gentleman got up from the table and said,
'Isn't that a great story?'
The professor responded that it really was a great story! As the man turned to leave, he said,
'You know, if that new preacher hadn't told me that I was one of God's children, I probably never would have amounted to anything!'
And he walked away.
The seminary professor and his wife were stunned. He called the waitress over and asked her,
'Do you know who that man was -- the one who just left that was sitting at our table?'
The waitress grinned and said,
'Of course. Everybody here knows him. That's Ben Hooper He's governor of Tennessee !'
Someone in your life today needs a reminder that they're
one of God's children!

Thinking about Mom

The first Halloween/All Saints/All Souls/voting/Mom's birthday since Mom joined Daddy in heaven - have me thinking about her. Halloween was her mom's birthday - both women were the most independent women I knew. My grandmother actually was one of the 1st women to vote - and missed only 1 election day - the day Mom was born! Both would have LOVED this election year!
In the homily this Sunday, our priest talked about how he always adds our parents in the prayers - very comforting as this week reminds me how lucky we all were to have such strong women in our lives. Mary Lou's ideals live on! Get out and vote!

Grandma & Katie / Kathryn

Friday night was joyful in so many ways. Most importantly, Bryan & the kids asked his mom & me to dinner while Amy had a MUCH-DESERVED Moms Night Out with her Moms Group.
Katie has decided that some times she's "Katie" and other times she's "Kathryn." While waiting for our dinner, Katie & her grandma were playing the boxes drawing game. Sharon (Grandma) finished one & put her "G" is the box. Katie finished the next one and Sharon told her to put her "K" in the box. Katie said she'd put a "T" in the box. When Sharon asked her why a "T," Katie said, "For the second half of my name - - -
K.T."

Puppy Size

Amy sent this & as Abbey put her head on my shoulder, I rejoiced in her "puppy size" - and realized what a gift she had given me!

This is one of the neatest stories you will ever hear. You will know precisely what this little girl is talking about at the end!
'Danielle keeps repeating it over and over again. We've been back to this animal shelter at least five times. It has been weeks now since we started all of this,' the mother told the volunteer.
'What is it she keeps asking for?' the volunteer asked.
'Puppy size!' replied the mother.
'Well, we have plenty of puppies, if that's what she's looking for.'
'I know... we have seen most of them, ' the mom said in frustration. Just then Danielle came walking into the office.
'Well, did you find one?' asked her mom.
'No, not this time,' Danielle said with sadness in her voice. 'Can we come back on the weekend?' The two women looked at each other, shook their heads and laughed.
'You never know when we will get more dogs. Unfortunately, there's always a supply,' the volunteer said. Danielle took her mo ther by the hand and headed to the door.
'Don't worry, I'll find one this weekend,' she said. Over the next few days, both Mom and Dad had long conversations with her. They both felt she was being too particular.
'It's this weekend or we're not looking any more,' Dad finally said in frustration.
'We don't want to hear anything more about puppy size, either,' Mom added. Sure enough, they were the first ones in the shelter on Saturday morning. By now Danielle knew her way around, so she ran right for the section that housed the smaller dogs. Tired of the routine, mom sat in the small waiting room at the end of the first row of cages. There was an observation window so you could see the animals during times when visitors weren't permitted. Danielle walked slowly from cage to cage, kneeling periodically to take a closer look.
One by one the dogs were brought out and she held each one. One by one she said, 'Sorry, but you're not the one.' It was the last cage on this last day in search of the perfect pup. The volunteer opened the cage door and the child carefully picked up the dog and held it closely. This time she took a little longer. 'Mom, that's it! I found the right puppy! He's the one! I know it!' She screamed with joy. 'It's the puppy size!'
'But it's the same size as all the other puppies you held over the last few weeks,' Mom said.

'No not size... The sighs. When I held him in my arms, he sighed,' she said. 'Don't you remember? When I asked you one day what love is, you told me love depends on the sighs of your heart. The more you love, the bigger the sigh!'
The two women looked at each other for a moment Mom didn't know whether to laugh or cry. As she stooped down to hug the child, she did a little of both.
'Mom, every time you hold me, I sigh. When you and Daddy come home from work and hug each other, you both sigh. I knew I would find the right puppy if it sighed when I held it in my arms,' she said. Then, holding the puppy up close to her face, she said, 'Mom, he loves me. I heard the sighs of his heart!'
Close your eyes for a moment and think about the love that makes you sigh. I not only find it in the arms of my loved ones, but in the caress of a sunset, the kiss of the moonlight and the gentle brush of cool air on a hot day. They are the sighs of God. Take the time to stop and listen; you will be surprised at what you hear.

FOR THE HUSBAND WHO IS ON THE SOFA
BEING A COUCH POTATO,
BECAUSE HE IS HOME WITH ME
AND NOT OUT AT THE BARS.
FOR THE TEENAGER
WHO IS COMPLAINING ABOUT DOING DISHES
BECAUSE IT MEANS SHE IS AT HOME,
NOT ON THE STREETS.
FOR THE TAXES I PAY
BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM EMPLOYED.
FOR THE MESS TO CLEAN AFTER A PARTY
BECAUSE IT MEANS
I HAVE BEEN SURROUNDED BY FRIENDS.
FOR THE CLOTHES THAT FIT A LITTLE TOO SNUG
BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE ENOUGH TO EAT.
FOR MY SHADOW THAT WATCHES ME WORK
